THE HIGH LINE πŸŒΏπŸ™οΈ

New York Manhattan New York County

One of New York City’s most unique walks β€” a park built above the streets of Manhattan.

The High Line is an elevated public park created on a former freight railway line on Manhattan’s West Side. Stretching approximately 1.45 miles (2.3 km), it combines gardens, public art, architecture and impressive city views in a completely different way to experience New York.

Walk above the busy streets, relax among thousands of plants and discover a fascinating mix of old industrial New York and modern Manhattan.

WHAT TO SEE & DO πŸ“

🚢 Walk the High Line – Follow the elevated pathway through Chelsea and toward Hudson Yards, with plenty of places to stop along the way.

🌿 Gardens & Nature – The planting was inspired partly by the wild vegetation that naturally grew along the abandoned railway.

πŸ™οΈ City Views – Look between Manhattan’s buildings toward the Hudson River and down onto the streets below.

🎨 Public Art – Discover changing sculptures, murals, installations and performances along the route.

πŸš† See the Original Railway Tracks – Sections of the old freight railroad remain incorporated into the park’s landscape.

🏒 Explore Chelsea – Combine your walk with Chelsea’s galleries, restaurants and the nearby Chelsea Market.

πŸ™οΈ Finish at Hudson Yards – At the northern end, continue exploring Hudson Yards and see landmarks such as The Vessel.

FUN FACTS πŸ’‘

πŸš† The railway that became the High Line originally opened to trains in 1934, carrying freight directly through Manhattan’s industrial West Side.

🌱 After trains stopped running, nature gradually took over the abandoned tracks β€” helping inspire the landscape design you see today.

🌳 The first section of the High Line opened as a public park in 2009.

πŸ“ The park runs for approximately 1.45 miles (2.3 km) from the Meatpacking District toward Hudson Yards.

πŸ™οΈ Instead of demolishing the abandoned railway, local advocates fought to preserve it and transform it into the park that millions of people visit today.

HIDDEN GEMS πŸ’Ž

πŸͺŸ 10th Avenue Square & Overlook – Sit above 10th Avenue and watch New York traffic through a huge glass viewing window.

🌳 Chelsea Thicket – A denser, woodland-like section that provides a surprising green escape above Manhattan.

πŸŒ‡ Sunset Walk – Visit later in the day for beautiful light over the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline.

HELLO EXPLORER TIP πŸ’‘

Start around Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District and walk north toward Hudson Yards. This makes it easy to combine the High Line with Chelsea Market + the High Line + Hudson Yards in one trip.

The walk itself can be completed fairly quickly, but allow around 1.5–2 hours if you want to explore, take photos and enjoy the viewpoints along the way.
