Our Hello Explorer family recently had the opportunity to experience one of Vietnam’s most famous destinations — the incredible Ha Long Bay.
Located in northern Vietnam, Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in Southeast Asia. Famous for its thousands of limestone islands rising dramatically from emerald-green waters, it attracts millions of visitors from around the world every year.
The question is: Does it live up to the hype?
For us, the answer is yes.
Exploring the Bay by Boat 🚢
The best way to experience Ha Long Bay is from the water.
As our boat cruised through the bay, we were surrounded by towering limestone mountains, hidden lagoons, and spectacular scenery in every direction. Every turn revealed another postcard-perfect view.
One thing worth knowing before you visit is that Ha Long Bay is very popular. Throughout the day, you’ll share the bay with many other boats and visitors. While it may not feel like a remote hidden paradise, the incredible scenery more than makes up for it.

Sung Sot Cave – The Amazing Cave ⛰️
One of the highlights of our trip was visiting Sung Sot Cave, also known as “Surprise Cave.”
Inside, we discovered enormous chambers filled with impressive rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years.
The cave is one of the largest and most famous in Ha Long Bay and truly lives up to its name.

Kayaking Through Paradise 🛶
Another unforgettable experience was kayaking among the limestone islands.
We explored hidden corners, passed beneath towering cliffs, and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere away from the larger boats.

Beach Time and Swimming 🏝️
No Ha Long Bay adventure would be complete without a visit to one of the bay’s famous beaches.
The scenery is absolutely stunning, with turquoise water surrounded by dramatic limestone mountains.
During our visit, the beach was quite busy, with many tour boats arriving throughout the day. While it wasn’t the secluded tropical paradise some travelers might imagine, the surroundings were still beautiful and well worth the stop.

The Famous Viewpoint 📸
One of our favorite moments was reaching the famous viewpoint overlooking the bay.
The climb is relatively short but can become busy, especially during peak hours. When we visited, there were plenty of people making their way up to capture the iconic view.
Once you reach the top, however, it all makes sense.
The panoramic view of hundreds of limestone islands stretching across the horizon is absolutely breathtaking and easily one of the most impressive viewpoints we experienced in Vietnam.

Where We Stayed 🏨
We stayed in the Bai Chay area, close to both the beach and Sun World Ha Long.
The location was convenient for exploring the bay, but we were a little surprised by how quiet the area felt. Many buildings, hotels, and shopfronts appeared empty during our visit, and it wasn’t as lively as we expected.
That said, most people come to Ha Long for the bay itself — and for that, the location worked perfectly.
